The main goal of the Group is the investigation of nuclease-resistant oligonucleotides in deoxyribo and ribo series containing structurally diverse P-C bridging internucleotide linkages, with the aim to bring a new quality into the family of antisense and triplex forming (TFO) oligonucleotides, aptamers and other compounds interfering with gene expression.

The research involves (i) the design and chemical synthesis of novel types isopolar isosteric and nonisosteric phosphonate analogues of nucleotides, (ii) the solid-phase synthesis of chimeric oligonucleotides, (iii) the study on physico-chemical and biological properties of modified oligonucleotides, e.g. conformation of altered sugar-phosphate backbone, hybridization properties, nucleases resistance, ability to elicit RNase H activity, cellular uptake, etc.
